For the longest time I used to pride myself because of all the "bad" things I had never done. I was convinced that since I had never done certain things that were considered wrong or sinful that I was a good person. While in some cases this did make me "better" it didn't necessarily make me good. In order to truly be a good person, one must actually do good, not just abstain from bad.
Recently I have been trying to be more conscious of the good that I can do. Each day I try to pray and ask for opportunities to make a positive difference. When I receive a prompting, no matter how small, I try to follow through.  It could be as simple as picking up a small piece of trash someone else left behind or having a conversation with someone when I feel like I was "too busy".  Instead of walking by the dirty dishes hoping and assuming someone else will take care of them, I can do it.
It is amazing the opportunities we are given to help others when we simply ask. On top of that, the feeling of joy that comes from doing simple acts of kindness, (especially when it isn't necessary) is tremendous. I am convinced that if we try and do good rather than simply abstaining from bad we will receive more spiritual guidance, live happier and more fulfilling lives, and be able to grow into the person our Heavenly Father intended us to be.
